What is Total Package Concrete?

The term “total package concrete” often confuses people who are not in the construction industry. Total package concrete typically refers to the ability of a commercial concrete services firm to provide services that will satisfy all of the elements that may be required on a project.

Concrete has become a versatile element in the construction industry for both internal and external applications. Commercial foundations are often constructed from the combination of reinforced steel bar (known as rebar) to act as a skeleton, and concrete poured around it. This combination results in a rigidly sound foundation that is less likely to be compromised in any manner should an unplanned event impact the building.

Concrete is also utilized in the construction of buildings as walls and floors. In a typical wall formation, commonly referred to as a “tilt up”, the slab for the main floor is poured and finished. From there the floor slab is used as a workspace as it is perfectly level and affords the walls that benefit. The wall forms are laid out on the slab and then poured. Once the walls have cured they are lifted into place by a crane. Through the use of creative forming, the walls can be constructed with voids for the placement of doors and windows, and can have artistic elements such as grooves or shapes formed into them.

Bolts made of hardened steel are often formed into the concrete when the foundation is poured. These bolts are precisely placed in the foundation. The bolts have threaded ends on one end and are bent at a ninety degree angle on the other end. The latter end is placed into the wet concrete. Once the foundation has cured the threaded ends align perfectly with holes on the end of steel beams. These beams are secured to the foundation with large hardened steel nuts and then the entire area is encased in grout. Construction grout can harden to over 8,000 psi; which provides an additional reinforcing force to strengthen the structure.

The beams can then form the vertical elements that permit horizontal attaching of other beams to form a lateral structure on which metal sheets can be welded. Once these corrugated sheets are in place, reinforcement wire is laid down over them and elevated to a consistent level with small metal pieces known as “chairs”. The chairs allow the wire to become the middle of the floor slab. This provides additional support.

Site work is the segment of concrete services that often focuses on creative design. Concrete can be stamped, colored, and given unique textures to add to its visual appeal. The applications are numerous and are evidence of the evolution of concrete as a versatile substance.
