February 2001 Wayne Brothers, Inc. Steps Up Employee Recruitment and Training
Wayne Brothers, Inc. has hired former Cabarrus County Schools Assistant Superintendent for Planning and Organization Development, Jim Lunsford, to head up the creation of a customized training and recruitment program.
The purpose of the program is to identify and establish a specific training-based career ladder to better attract prospective employees. Lunsford says, "We are facing the same training challenge that every construction company has to face. With the unemployment rate where it is, there is a real premium on skilled workers".
The training and recruitment program will be implemented throughout the company's three divisions; core building, concrete finishing, and grading, focusing on crafts level positions. Incentives for the completion of certain levels of the program are increased pay and family/outdoor incentives, including picnics for employees and their families. The basis for the core training curriculum is The Wheels of Learning, developed by the National Center for Construction Education and Research and made available to Wayne Brothers, Inc. through the Carolinas Association of General Contractors.
Lunsford, who became acquainted with Wayne Brothers, Inc. President Keith Wayne through the Cabarrus Regional Chamber of Commerce, is well versed in vocational and technical education. Lunsford retired from his position as Assistant Superintendent for Cabarrus County Schools in July of 2000. Prior to that he served as Vocational and Technical Education Director for Cabarrus County Schools. Lunsford also worked with the North Carolina State Department of Public Instruction Division of Vocational and Technical Education and taught career exploration courses with Alamance County Schools. Keith Wayne says, "I am pleased that we were able to attract someone of Jim's caliber to lead our company's training and recruiting efforts. Jim is uniquely qualified to develop an internal training curriculum and delivery system for our skilled craftsmen needs. In addition, he understands and relates to the type of individuals that we need to recruit for these training programs and career development here with us at Wayne Brothers."
