Carolinas AGC member Wayne Brothers, Inc. (WBI), Davidson, NC, has been awarded the AGC of America 2002 National Craft Training Award for its outstanding craft-level training program.WBI’s training program, which links to Rowan-Cabarrus Community College and the Apprenticeship Program of the NC and US Departments of Labor, features aligned courses for its employees in form carpentry, grading/heavy equipment, and placing and finishing concrete. The training program is directed by Jim Lunsford and is delivered through classroom and on-site skill performance activities linked to the National Center for Construction Education and Research’s (NCCER) Wheels of Learning Curriculum and taught by company supervisory personnel. WBI’s program is aligned with its employees’ career frame-work— and employees receive additional pay for attending training classes. Keith Wayne, President and CEO of WBI, said that the program, which has been in place for nearly 2 years, was established to “enable employees to take the initiative to improve their own work related knowledge and skill, and to enhance the overall productivity of the company.” He added that “the modern workplace demands that workers, including those in the construction industry, increasingly rely on their minds as wells as their hands. This means that learning and training never stop if a business wants to maintain its competitive edge in such a knowledge-based economy.” Wayne Brothers, along with only one other recipient for 2002, was presented with the National Craft Training Award at the National AGC Convention in Honolulu, Hawaii on March 19, 2003.
