Wayne Brothers Makes the Largest Concrete Placement in Company History
On Saturday, November 7, 2009, Wayne Brothers, Inc. made the largest single concrete placement to date in the company’s 24-year history. The pour took place at Central Piedmont Community College’s New Student Parking Deck # 3 at the Central Campus in Charlotte, NC. It was the first of two scheduled mat foundation pours for this Wayne Brothers’ project.

The pour consisted of more than 3,500 cubic yards of 4,000-psi self-consolidating concrete and 320 tons of reinforcing steel. Self-consolidating concrete is utilized in order to eliminate the need for mechanical vibration and to minimize the placement labor required. The mat foundation ranged in thickness from 4’ to 7’-3” and included multiple foundation elevation changes, a monolithically cast elevator pit and cast-in embeds for the pre-cast parking deck structure above. The pour maintained an average placement rate of 300 cubic yards per hour and was completed in 12 hours. Coastal Carolina Pumping, Inc. provided three 47 meter concrete truck pumps and one 61 meter backup truck pump for the massive pour. Concrete Supply Company, Inc. provided the self-consolidating concrete for the foundation and utilized 47 ready mix trucks and 3 plants for a total of 450 truck loads of concrete to support the pour.
Wayne Brothers’ project manager, Daniel Wayne, explained, “With the magnitude of this pour and with as many site logistical challenges that it presented, it was successfully executed as planned for a few simple reasons: a good plan and excellent commitment to safety, quality and service!”
The last mat foundation pour for the new parking deck is scheduled to be complete by the end of November.

Building Bridges With Future Construction Managers
|
Wayne Brothers was pleased to provide personal protective equipment to the Georgia Southern University (GSU) student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) in their bid to win the 2009 “Steel Bridge Competitive Event”. The competition is held during the ASCE Southeast Regional Spring Conference, which was hosted by Vanderbilt University, March 26-28. The top three winners of this event head to the national competition in May.
Although the GSU team did not win the event, its bridge passed the lateral load test with flying colors. The rules allowed for a maximum total vertical deflection of 2 inches with a 2,500 pound load. The GSU bridge only deflected 11/16 inches, well within tolerance.
Thomas Brown, chapter president and second cousin to our own Bobby Phillips, VP of Preconstruction, remarked, “Our bridge ended up being less than 1/8th of an inch off in length, which pretty much knocked us out of placing in the top three… I was proud of our school for designing and fabricating our bridge.”
In spite large budgets, the bridges of the three largest schools in the competition failed. GSU created its bridge with donated materials and spent only $60 on welding supplies.

GSU’s team members are Charles Lieble, Chalres Kirksey, Richard Towns, and Thomas Brown. GSU faculty member, Scott McKinley , supervised the fabrication of the bridge in the school’s manufacturing lab. SteelFab of Dublin donated the steel and Dixie Industrial zinc coated the bridge, making it one of the sharpest looking of the competition.
Thomas Brown visited Wayne Brothers and toured jobsites during spring break in March. He plans to become a construction project manager upon graduation, and hopefully we will see him again on a recruiting trip!
Congratulations to the GSU Bridge Team for its impressive construction and thanks for showing off those WBI hard hats!

NC Dept. of Labor Recognizes WBI Master Craftsmen Program
Recently Wayne Brothers was honored to be recognized by the NC Dept. of Labor as the first privately held construction company to certify apprentices as Master Craftsmen, the highest training level. Employees who have earned their hard earned Master Craftsmen certifications are Bruce Ashworth, Rick Adsit, Josh Akers, Daniel Wayne, and Scott Ashworth.
The NCDOL Apprenticeship and Training Bureau, in partnership with employers, certifies apprenticeship programs that provide on-the-job training in specialized occupations. As highly trained professionals, these employees are an invaluable asset to the company.

WBI has less employee turnover and better employer/employee relations. By providing employment and training opportunities for residents in the community, we are recognized as local industry leaders.”
In 2005 WBI instituted the apprenticeship program in conjunction with the NCDOL. Since its inception, thirty journeymen apprentices have been certified. Ted Bertram, Andrew Jackson, Luise Frayre, and Daniel Wayne were the latest group to earn this distinction.
“Wayne Brothers has developed and excellent apprenticeship training program,” stated Tim Eldridge, NCDOL assistant bureau chief. “It was an honor to present the journeyman and master craftsman certificates.”
