COURSE OFFERINGS:
Fundamentals of Form Construction - This course covers content fundamental to concrete form work at Wayne Brothers, Inc. as well as construction-related content basic to the building industry as a whole.
Form Carpentry (Levels I, II and III) - Provides technical skills and knowledge related to form carpentry.
Concrete Finishing (Levels I, II and III) - Provides technical skills and knowledge related to placing and finishing concrete.
Grading/Heavy Equipment Operation (Levels I, II and III) - Provides technical skills and knowledge related to operating heavy equipment necessary to grade and prepare physical sites for construction projects.
English as a Second Language - Provides basic training in English-based communication skills for employees whose primary language is Spanish. (provided through Rowan-Cabarrus Community College).
Spanish in the Construction Workplace - Provides basic training in Spanish appropriate to communicating in a construction-related workplace. The training is tailored for employees whose primary language is English. (provided through Rowan-Cabarrus Community College).
Basic Education Skills Training (BEST) - Provides basic 3adult literacy2 training in math and communication skills to persons who desire to enhance their capabilities in these areas.

Aim
To expose a college student-intern to the broad field of construction services represented by Wayne Brothers, Inc. with specific emphasis on estimating, core building, concrete placing/ finishing, grading and support (e.g., equipment, training, marketing, office, etc.) operations and provide paid work experience in concrete construction.

Part I: Orientation – 3 to 4 Days
A.Overview of Company and Its Operational Functions
·General purpose/mission of the business, core business cycle, organizational structure, history, administrative and support functions,- President/CEO

D.Development of an Internship Plan for the 9-Week Experience Component
Intern will work with a WBI Mentor to develop a plan for the internship experience.
E. Tour of Selected Job Sites
Intern will visit selected WBI job sites to observe the functions covered in this phase actually in operation at the field/job site level.
Part II: Work Experience – 9 Weeks
A.Business Development/Estimating
Intern will shadow the Business Development Director making calls on prospective clients.Interns will also spend time shadowing the estimators while an estimate is being developed and a bid being finalized.
B.Project Management
Intern will work with a project manager in actually (or in a simulated manner if circumstance requires) pre-planning a construction project that has been awarded.They will also review what processes have to be followed to prepare a job site for construction services provided by WBI.
C.Supervision
Intern will spend one day shadowing a WBI Core Group Superintendent in performing the duties of a job site supervisor.
D.Hands-OnField Work Experience
Interns will be assigned to a WBI job site and work as a craft-level employee for the duration of this phase.
Part III: Summary and Closure – 1 to 2 Days
College Student-Intern will:
ØSelect one function from Part II A-D and shadow that area for a half –day or day to clarify how that function impacts/was impacted by their fieldwork experiences.
ØMeet with their mentor, the WBI Training/Recruitment Director, and others, if appropriate, to summarize their internship experiences, participate in a question/answer session, and complete a post evaluation of the entire activity.

*Note:During the initial orientation phase, the student-intern will receive an overview of the specific function and how it relates to the core work/mission of the company, as well as be provided a chance to ask questions about it.The job-site visits will provide the intern an opportunity to observe in person the work actually being done.
**Note: The intern will also be invited to attend any of the craft-level training classes that are being held during the period of this internship.

Advanced Level College Student Internship Program
Wayne Brothers, Inc. is also offering an advanced level internship experience for selected college students who successfully complete this initial program.In this advanced program, the college student (usually a senior) will select from the areas in A – D of Part II of the initial program (see above) and focus their work experience in this area entirely at a more intensive level.The objective of this level is to help the student focus their career interests in a specific area of construction related to the services offered by WBI.These careers could include becoming an estimator, a project manager, a field or project engineer, a work group manager or a field superintendent.All work experience will involve pay, but college credit will have to be negotiated between the intern and his/her college or university program department head.Individuals who show a strong interest in our company and exhibit the knowledge and skills that match our needs will be recruited to participate in this advanced level.This option will be discussed in Phase III of the initial internship program.Thanks for your interest in WBI.
